The Master's program in Technomathematik is conducted by the Department of Mathematics of the University of Hamburg and the Hamburg University of Technology. The program is consecutive and has a research-oriented profile. In terms of content, the Master's program in Technomathematik comprises the subjects mathematics (min. 40 %), computer science and engineering (together min. 20 %).
Students learn to address complex problems and to solve them using scientific methods, even beyond the limits of the current state of knowledge. Considering the requirements and changes in the professional world and the interdisciplinary references, the study program is intended to impart the necessary subject-specific methods and to expand skills and knowledge that enable students to work scientifically, to apply and critically classify scientific findings and to act responsibly.
The Master's program in Technomathematik is a very diverse course of study, offering numerous opportunities for an individual design of the program. It consists of a general mandatory area (6 credit points), a compulsory elective area (68 credit points), a free elective area (16 credit points) and the final thesis (30 credit points). The first two semesters serve to deepen the student's knowledge of the subject. It is recommended to complete a seminar (6 credit points) in applied mathematics and thus the only compulsory part already at this time. In the first semester, but not later than at the beginning of the second semester, the individual composition of the desired modules is discussed and determined in a compulsory study consultation. Of course, the study plan can be changed later in consultation with the chair of the examination board.
In the elective area, specializations can be selected from mathematics, engineering and computer science. At least 46 credit points must be earned in mathematics and at least 20 in engineering or computer science. In mathematics, modules from the three specializations optimization, differential equations and numerics can be taken. For engineering and computer science, all specializations offered in the master's programs at the TU Hamburg can be selected. The choice of modules in the elective area is regulated by the subject-specific regulations.
In the free elective area with 16 credit points, basically all free elective courses of the University of Hamburg are available for this area as well as all modules of the Master's programs of the TU Hamburg. In this area, for example, language courses or courses outside natural sciences and engineering can also be taken.
The final Master's examination is the professionally qualifying conclusion of an in-depth and research-related, scientific education in the Technomathematik program. The master's thesis is to be written in an area of applied mathematics. The Master's degree in Technomathematik qualifies the student for a doctorate in Mathematics.
