WPC Masterclass by Edward Witten: Invitation to Black Hole Thermodynamics
Wann: Mi, 15.01.2025, 11:00 Uhr bis Fr, 17.01.2025, 15:30 Uhr
Wo: DESY, Notkestraße 85, 22607 Hamburg, Geb.5, Auditorium
Abstract: Since the work of Bekenstein and Hawking over half a century ago, it has been understood that although classically a black hole is a featureless object that satisfies a ``no hair theorem'', quantum mechanically a black hole behaves as a complex many-body system that obeys the laws of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. I will provide an introduction to some of the old and new ideas in this subject, in which much is understood and much is not understood.
The Wolfgang Pauli Centre is organizing a Masterclass by Edward Witten, the laureate of the 2023 Hamburg Prize for Theoretical Physics.
The lecture series consists of 7 sessions in total. The colloquium on Tuesday is part 1 of the lecture series and will be followed by 6 sessions on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
We invite you to attend the colloquium on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 6:30 PM in the Agathe-Lasch Lecture Hall at the University of Hamburg. Students who wish to attend Edward Witten's lecture series are asked to also participate in the colloquium. The colloquium is aimed at all interested parties and is open to everyone.
The courses on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (January 15-17, 2025, from11:00 AM to 12:30 AM and 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM) will take place in the auditorium at DESY. Click here for directions.
